Altruism in meerkat and humans
The reading passage states that an altruistic person or animal have no or little reward by his acts. However, the professor contradicts this using example of people and meerkats.
First, the full guts sentinel. Professor said that some time ago, scientific though that sentinels sacrifice their food in order to be aware of any danger whilst the others Meerkat are eating. But now, science have found that sentinel has always eaten before doing his job
Second first to see first to escape. The passage states that sentinels put themselves in danger when a predator is coming. However, professor contradicts this saying that event though sentinel is alone, is the first to see the predator, so it has more chances to run and survive.
Finally, is donation pure altruism?. Even though, body organs donation could benefit family member’s o stranger, the professor states that the donator has a non material reward which is to receive the appreciation from the society and from himself. Hence, the lecturer suggest that this reward could explain the people behaviors.
In summary, the professor give three examples that contradicts the theory states in the passage.
