Ansel Easton Adams (Feb. 1902–Apr. 1984), and American photographer and environmentalist, has had his black-and-white landscape photographs of the American West widely reproduced on calendars, posters, and in books. Adams, with Fred Archer, developed the Zone System to determine proper exposure and to adjust the contrast of the final print in a photograph. His works held such clarity and depth that they became the foremost record of what National Parks were like before tourism. In California, envelopes containing photographic negatives considered to be made by Ansel Adams was found at a sale. There are several factors that make experts believe that the negatives are the work of Adams.
One factor pointing to the photographs being works by Adams is a photographic negative of pine trees leaning downward on a cliff. This same image is seen in other well known photographs of Adams.
Also, the handwriting of the address on the envelope looked very similar to that of Virginia Adams, Ansel Eaton Adams' wife, who acted as his assistant. It is very likely that Adams created the negatives and Virginia Adams organized them. This would explain the similar handwriting.
And finally, some of the negative appear to have fire damage. It is known that Adams' studio has caught on fire before. A third of his negatives were burned in that fire so some evidence of fire damage would be expected on surviving negatives.
Recently there has been tons of debate regarding the credit for developing the negatives which depicted the National Parks with profound clarity and depth. The author in the passage claims that negatives are the work of Ansel Easton Adams, an American photographer and environmentalist, whose black and white landscape photographs of American West was widely reproduced in various forms of printing media. The lecturer, however, is quick to point out the major flaws in the claims made by author.
To begin with, the author argues that since negatives of pine trees leaning downward on a cliff is an image seen in other well known photographs of Adams, the pine tree negative in New Cemity National park should also be a work of Adams. The lecturer challenges this argument by pointing out that it could be the work of any photographer since pine tree is a common occurence in the work of many artists. There is no solid evidence to conclude it was the work of Adam.
Furthermore, the author believes that the handwriting of the address on envelope looked similar to that of Virginia Adams, Ansel Eaton Adams' wife, who was as his assistant and organised Adams negatives. The professor, however, rebuts this by mentioning that there were misspelling of common landmarks in the letters which could not have been done by Virginia Adams, since she was born and raised around the same area of the landmarks.
Finally, the author posits that few negatives show fire damage, which can be related to fire in Adam studio where he lost one third of his negatives. The lecturer disputes this by contending that negatives are made of extremely flammable material which is very common to catch fire. Thus, negatives with fire damage could be the work of any photographer, the argument made by the author is not enough evidence to narrow it down to Adams.
To sum up, both the writer and the professor hold conflicting views about the credit for Adams negatives. Its clear that they will have trouble finding common ground to this issue.
