Antlers
The listening lecture totally opposes to the reading passage in the topic of functions of antlers. First of all, the reading says that the function of antlers is heat dissipation. However, the listening argues that this is not likely to be true. Researchers had find out that deers often lose their antlers during the hot summer month. Besides, evidences have shown that their antlers are actually lager during the cold winter climate. In other words, since deers often lost their antlers during the hot summer and they have larger antlers during winter, the propose of these antlers are not likely to be heat dissipation.
Secondly, the reading implies that antlers are serve as defensive weapon to protect their young. On the other hand, the listening indicates that these antlers are often on the male deers, and young deers were often take care by the female. If the propose of antlers are weapon, it should grow on females instead of males. Beside, evidences had shown that deers often kick their predators such as wolf instead using their antlers as a weapon. It is obvious, since antlers located on the top of their head, they will need to look down when they are attacking which is a very ineffective weapon. Indeed, deers do not use these antlers as a weapon to protect their young.
Last but not least, the reading asserts that antlers serve as a establishing predominance among males. However, the listening suggests that the two males will challenge each first, and they will make a sound to communicated. Besides, researchers have find out that the deer with smaller antlers do not usually back up, and some deers with larger antlers will actually walk away. To say it differently, the deer with larger antlers are not likely to establish predominance among males.
