Apparently, there has been a debate about the advantage of the growing of genetically modified trees, A group of scientists holds the belief that there are many benefits for the environment and the farmers, from planting genetically modified trees, as the reading passage illustrate, while, another group of scientists refutes all these benefits and give many disadvantages, as the professor in the lecture does.
First of all, the lecture claims that the naturally growing trees are diverse in their properties, so that would give them the strength to cope the environmental challenges, for example, if some trees died because of insects, other trees would survive because they have natural defence against insects, also, if other trees had died because some environmental crises, other will survive as they can protect themselves from this factor, then, if we use the genetic modification that would make all the trees with the same properties, to state it more clearly, one factor may lead to wiping out all the trees as they are exactly the same. By this point, the lecturer cast the doubt regarding the reading passage point about the increase in the survival rate among trees if we used the genetically modified tree.
Second, the lecture maintains an opposite side of view about the increase of farmers income if they used the genetically modified trees, he says, to used this trees, the farmers have to buy the seeds from the company which is responsible for this modification, and for sure, they are much expensive, in addition to that, they have to buy the seeds each time they want to grow up another tree, under the law it is in legal to do that by themselves. So that would not lead to decrease the cost as the author assumes in the reading passage.
Finally, the professor contends that the using of the genetically modified trees would have a bad impact on other trees in the same area, and can cause more damage to the environment. The genetically modified tree are growing aggressively and in fast rate rather than the natural trees, so they would compete with the natural occurring tree for the resources, like water and sunlight, as a result, that would have a bad impact on the natural trees, so that would negate the reading passage claiming about the benefits to the environment.
