Asteroids are large space objects made of rock and ice There are hundreds of thousands of asteroids in our solar system Though we often hear ideas about establishing colonies of humans to live and work on our Moon or our neighboring planet Mars some t

The reading and the lecture is about colonization in asteroids. The author of the article states that it will be a profitable option for sending people to an asteroid and provides three reasons of support. However, the lecturer challenges the opinion made by the author and refutes each of the author's reasons.

To begin with, the author argues that it will be easy for spacecraft to land and take off the asteroids because of their low gravity. The article mentions that low gravity will make it easy for spacecraft to carry more equipment needed to set up with less fuel. The specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that the low gravity in the asteroids will create the risk of losing muscle mass and lower bone density. Additionally, he says that even after staying only few months, the astronauts will face the health problems of lower bone density and muscle mass.

Secondly, the writer posits that the asteroids will be a profitable source of precious materials that are rare in the earth. In the article, it is said that because of these valuable materials the colonists or business sponsoring them can get more than the cost of collecting and sending back to the earth. The professor, however, rebuts this by mentioning that the cost of the supporting and transportation of the materials may be very high which will lower the profit because of the tough condition in the asteroids. He also said that price may decrease when there will be a large amount of supply of such materials.

Finally, the reading says that it will be very easy to reach the asteroids as some of them are very near to the earth. Moreover, in the article, it is said that some asteroids sometimes come very near to the earth which is closer than the moon. In contrast, the professor's position on this that the asteroids may be close to the earth at some point in time but eventually it will go far from the earth. So, it will be easy when they reach the asteroids but in the time of returning it maybe sometimes impossible because of the very large distance between the earth and the asteroids.
