The reading and lecture both discusses the collapse of the civilization on the Easter Island. While the author of reading argues by giving three major theory, the lecturer disputes the claims presented in the article. He states that all the theories stated are fallacious.
According to the reading one of the reasons for perisihing of the Eastern Island people was due to their exessive use of wood. The construction of statues, transporation, cooking and agriculture led to deforestestion and ultimately the end of civilization. The lecturer challenges this argument. He states that evidence that shows that the people of Eastern island replaces the forest by grasslands. The grasslands prevented erosion and provided essential for the civilization.
The second theory stated by author is that the rats were responible in eating up the the new shoots of the new plants hence causing deterimental effect on regrowth of the forests. The lecturer however, asserts that rats were used by Easter Island people as a food source. Bones of rats were found along with chicken showing that thery were consumed by the inhabitants.
Lastly, the author puts forth the idea that war between short and long eared people caused crumbling of civilization. The lecturer in contrast, scrutinizes the theory stating that the war took placed in 1618 which was hundred of years before the expolartion of Easter Island took place. He states that the population had decresed by two-third when the island was revisited by James Cook. Hence the lecturer believes that all the theories are erronous and destuction of Easter Island remains a mystery.
