Wilderness management has advanced greatly over the last century due in part to such practices as the suppression of forest fires and limitations on the clear cutting of trees Monitoring forests for small brushfires is easier with aircraft as is the

The reding and lecture are both about supression of forest fires. While the author of article argues that the supression of fires have improved the forest conditions in numerous way, the lecturer disputes the claims presented in the article. Her position is that supression of forest fires have had a long term deterimental effect on forests.

According to the author the fire suppersion has allowed maturation of many oak tree in the hickory at the Eastern Seaboard. He states that improved tree conditions have allowed treetops to form a continous canopy. The lecturer challenges this argument and states that the maturation of only already grown trees have taken place. She states due to thick oak trees forming canopy as made it difficult for the light to penetrate to the forest bed where the yound oak seeding still require light to grow.

Secondly author states that suppersion of fires have allowed growth of vines and other plants closer to the ground. He also puts forth a point stating that due chemical toxicins released due to forest fires, the nutrient value of soil decreses. The lecturer however, asserts that not only small vines but overall competetion of trees have increased. Maple trees are overtaking the oak offspring population in hickory. She also states that when forest fires occur they release large number nutrients to the forest bed from the burned plants. She states these nutrient are very essential for growth of young plants.

Lastly the author states sure to suppersion of fire it has benefited the wildlife. The deer population in the hickory as increased largely. In contrast, the lecturer stance is that due to increase in deer population there is a deleterious effect on the oak population. She says that the young oak trees that have survived the dreadful circumstances due to lack of light and maple trees taking over, get eaten by the deers.
