bees exists 200m years ago
The reading passage and lecture are both regarding whether bees existed on Earth 200 million years ago. The author of the article casts doubts on it and gives several skeptics in support of this argument. Although these points seem reasonable, the professor in the lecture disputes them, implying that bees indeed existed 200 million years ago for the following reasons.
To begin with, the author states that the earliest fossilized remains of actual bees can only be dated 100 million years ago, indicating that bees weren’t present 200 million years ago. Conversely, the lecturer suggests that the trees which helped preserve bees probably were rare at that time. Accordingly, despite the fact that there wasn't resin in which bees could have remained, it doesn’t mean bees didn’t exist 200 million years ago.
Second, even though the author claims that flower plants on which bees feed appeared on Earth 125 million years ago doubting that bees existed 200 million years ago, the lecturer argues that it is a misconception. Since bees probably could consume other types of plants such as pine trees and could adapt to flower plants after they came into being, the lecturer disagrees with the author.
Last but not least, the author cites a specific cap as proof that the fossilized structures found in Arizona weren’t identical to the modern bees’ chambers and indicates that the fossilized forms were made by other insects. Nevertheless, the lecturer points out that the fossilized structures embodied a waterproof substance that can be identified in modern chambers of bees. As a result, the lecturer dismisses the author.
