The belief that animals can sense an earthquake before it occurs has been held since ancient times. Countries such as China and Japan, which suffer frequently from the devastation brought about by seismic disturbances, have a long history of attempting to

In the passage, the author supports the belief that animals can sense the occurrence of an earthquake and cites a few examples in support of his argument. However the professor does not agree with the author.

According to the passage, apparently animals of all kinds behave awkwardly just before quake. But the professor explains that people tend to recall the animal behavior from their memory only after the disaster has taken place. The animals may behave unusually from time to time. But people hardly care for the behavior of the animals in absence of any calamity. It is only prior to any catastrophic event that they remember their peculiar behavior.

Secondly, the author has provided an example in the passage stating the order of evacuation of Hicheng in China was based on the animal behavior prior to the devastating earthquake. However the professor directly refutes it by stating that the order of evacuation was the result of four shocks before the major quake. She explains that a major quake is generally preceded by several quakes of smaller magnitudes.

The professor states the claim of the scientists that there is no relationship of their sensing of an impending earthquake with the missing of animals in conjunction with the earthquake. She also says that there is very less evidence regarding the quake sensing capacity of animals. Thus the points and explanation in the lecture cast doubt in the points made in reading the passage.
