The reading and lecture discussed about Chevalier's memoir which was written about his life. However, both of them has presented contrasting claims. In order to support the statements made in the reading, the author has mentioned three reasons and these three main reasons have been undermined by the speaker.
Firstly, the writer of the reading asserted that Chevalier was not rich as he took loan from the merchant. the speaker rebuts the claim by claiming that It doesn't mean that Chevalier was not rich , sometimes person has to wait for the money and till that time one can burrow money from someone.
Secondly, the author contended that the Chevalier could not remember exact details of the meeting with Voltaire. The lecturer, on the other hand, maintains that Chevalier takes reference from the notes that he prepare on the same night when he had a conversation with Voltaire and consulted at the time of writing in his memoir and hence Chevalier are reliable.
lastly, the author posits that Chevalier might have bribed the jailor in order to escape from the prison as Chevalier had many connections with the powerful people. however, the women in her speech claims that there were other prisoners who also had good connection but still they were not able to escape and in addition to this there are records that the Jail has to repair the ceiling of the Chevalier' locker.
In conclusion, the reading presented three major claims to undermine the Chevalier's memoir but lecture rebuked every claim made by the author.
