The “comics medium” includes newspaper comic strips such as Dennis the Menace and comic books such as Spider-Man. Scholars around the world agree that comics are a uniquely American art form.
The first commercially successful comic strip was Hogan’s Alley, a comic strip from the 1890s. Hogan’s Alley featured the Yellow Kid, the world’s first popular cartoon character. This strip and its character marked the beginning of comics and was American in every respect. Set in a low-income neighborhood in New York City, Hogan’s Alley dealt with the lives of ordinary Americans. It was written and drawn by American cartoonist R.F. Outcault. Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst, two famous and influential American publishers, printed the comic strip in their newspapers.
The first popular comic book in the world was also American. Action Comics, a series that is still in print today, was initially released in 1938. It featured Superman, the world’s first superhero. Like Hogan’s Alley, Superman was American-created.
Americans invented comic strips, and Americans have exported their unique art form to the rest of the world. Japanese comics, called manga, were inspired by the comics that Americans brought to Japan after World War II. Popular European comics series such as Smurfs and Asterix are influenced by Disney comic books. Today, American-created Disney comic characters are more popular in Europe than ever.
The comics medium started in America. While it has spread around the world, even comics that aren’t created by Americans have an undeniable American influence. This is why so many art and literature scholars recognize the comic strip as a truly American art form.
The article presents the notion that most scholars around the world agree that comics are a uniquely American art form. More specifically, in regards to the passage, the author presents certain examples as to how comics have emerged and evolved from America. The listener, however, holds very different notions in this respect. As a matter of fact, the lecturer states that as more comics were studied, it was realized that America was not the sole contributor in this domain.
To start with, the passage mentions a succesful comic strip-Hogan's Alley, from the 1890s. It claims that it was the world's first cartoon character which was written and drawn by American cartoonist R.F. Outcault and published by Americans Joseoh Pultizer and Willian Randolph Hearst. The speaker, however, is quick to oppose this view. He argues that Hogan's Alley was infact not the first successful popular comic. He supports this by stating that popular European and British comics were published as far as back in 1736. The speaker goes on to argue that the characters in the comics were mostly immigrants and that the publisher was himself an immigrant from Hungary.
Secondly, the reading excerpt states that the first popular comic book in the world, the Action Comics, which featured Superman was initially realeased in 1938. It was American-created. The speaker does not agree with this fact and states that sixteen years back, in 1922, the Tintin was published which went on to become an internationally published and recognized comic. It had thus predated the publication of superman. The lecturer infact adds that the artist in the superman comic was Canada based, and not an American.
The reading passage concludes by stating that Americans hace exported their unique art form to the rest of the world. Japanses comics, namely manga, was an inspiration taken from the comics that were brought in by Americans after the second World War. He also mentioned that European comics like Smurfs and Asterix were influenced by Disney comic books. The speaker has objected this notion and stated that Japanese comics were traditional in nature. Infact, European comics were characterised by European design and style which were read and popularized across the globe.
To conclude, it is important to note that the passage and the speaker shares diametrically opposite points of view. Thus, they are unlikely to share a common ground on the fact that comics are a uniquely American art form.
