The reading and the lecture are both about a bee nest fossil found in Arizona 200 million years ago. There is an argument whether bees existed 200 million years ago. The author of the reading feels that bees cannot exist in that time. The lecture challenges the claims made by the author. He is of the opinion that there must have been a bee.
To begin with, the author argues that there is no bee in the fossil which was found by people in Arizona. If it was a bee nest, at least one bee should be inside in the fossil. However, no bees were found. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that it is fact that there was no bee inside the fossil. However, bees could not be preserved in fossils, so that is the reason why no bees were found. Bees can live by resin from the tree. However, there was no tree with resin million years ago.
Secondly, the writer suggests that there are also no flowers that time which bees would have feed on. As you know, bees feed on some flowers. However, the flowers actually existed since 125 million years ago. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by mentioning that they can feed even though it is not a flower. He elaborated on this by bringing up the point that not only flowers but also pine trees or ferns can be fed to bees. Bees pollinate from them even though it is not a flower.
Finally, the author posits that structures of bees nests lack some detail of usual one. Normally, bees nests have caps which prevent them from raining. It works as a waterproof chemical. In contrast, the lecturer’s position is that bees nests in that time had the same feature with caps. The house itself is waterproof. Hence, they did not need to have caps.
