the differences between online university programs and traditional courses by means of
one-on-on communications
online courses are not challenging or have high quality as usual courses
top schools do not offer online programs
The reading compares online degree programs with usual programs in knowledge-based institues and claims that online programs are weaker according to three major reasons. However, the lecturer completely disagrees with the content in the essay and rejects each of the author's opinions about on-line programs with solid proofs. In the following, these main controversials between the author and the lecturer will be discussed.
First, the article concedes that online courses and programs do not consist face-to-face communications with the teachers. However, on the other hand, the lecturer refutes this statement by saying that private meetings are also available in nontraditional programs but not necessarily face-to-face. He claims that every student can schedule a meeting with his/ her teacher simply via E-mail, chat, or telephone conference.
Second, the passage agrees that these new programs are not as useful and appropriate as usual courses as students are not forced to join real classes. The professor opposes this idea and declares that these courses must meet the same quality as the on-campus courses. For his statement, he claims that his students complained about their on-line courses' difficulties inasmuch as they had to have more self-discipline and better time management in order to benefit from their courses. Moreover, they had to be aware of the technology related to these courses to digest their concepts.
Third, the author says that high-class and novel universities do not hold on-line classes, but the professor thoroughly rejects this idea insomuch as he recognizes that well-known universities present on-line programs and courses even some of them offer an entire degree online.
