Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?
Companies should pay for employees to get a university degree.

There is no doubt that employees with college level education would always be valuable assets to their employers. Hence, some people propose that companies should cover the expense of the higher education for their recruits for their own benefits. Although the value of a well-educated worker is undeniable, I disagree that companies should pay for employees’ university tuition.

My first reason is that, covering the cost of employees’ university education is a big risk for a company. As commercial organizations, companies pay a lot of attention to various potential risks to maintain healthy and smooth operation. While employees usually perform better with university degrees than those who have not, thanks to their further study and training, it also comes with great financial cost. The problem is, after employees acquire the degree they desire with the support from their company, there is no guarantee that these employees will stay, unless they are forced by signed agreements that will restrict their future options, which are usually not favored by employees and may even create rifts between two parties if it is not treated carefully. Therefore, paying for employees’ university degree is a risky move that company should try to avoid.

Secondly, apart from the risk, companies have on obligation to cover employees’ education. On the contrary, it is the employees themselves who are responsible for their personal development. University degrees are signs of one’s achievements in specific fields, regardless of whether the result would serve his employer or not. Thus, employees should try to take the responsibility of their own self-improvement rather than waiting for their companies’ sponsorship. For example, an application programmer can choose to further his study in psychology for his own personal interest. As for his employer, there is no reason to support him financially because psychology is not even remotely related to his duty. As a result, to pay the tuition by himself is a more reasonable and practical choice than trying to convince his boss to cover the bill for him.

In conclusion, companies should not cover the expense of employees’ university education due to the risk such action can bring. Instead, employees should pay for their own degree, since in this way, they would have more freedom in their own development.
