The article discusses the theory of usage of the great houses of Chaco Canyon. And provides three competing theories of supports. However, the professor explains these theories are not convincing and refutes each of the author's theories.
First, the reading claims that Chaco structures were purely residential and hundreds of people were living each house. The professor of lecture rebuts this by saying that these were not residential. Outside of these structures may look like native American but insides were totally different. He added that there were few fireplaces only for about ten people. So, it contradicts with the theory of hundreds of people.
Second, the article avers that the structures were used to store food supplies for long periods of time as a long-lasting supply of food. Anyhow, the professor contends that it might possible to need store food for a long time but the structures were not used to store foods. Houses were not fully cover to protect the food for a long time.
Final, the reading posits that the Chaco houses were used as ceremonial centers and people gathered to Pueblo Alto for special ceremonies. The lecture opposes that by stating that this theory was not also good enough. The excavations of the Pueblo Alto revealed that there were many construction materials like sands, rocks etc which might be the evidence of storing room for construction things.
