Although both the reading and listening passage deal with the same topic the function of the building of Chaco Canyon, their perspective are different. While the author of the reading believes that the Chaco structures were used for different purposes by three theories, the lecturer casts doubt on the writer’s idea. He refutes all the theories made by the reading.
The first point made in the reading is that the building was used for residential. The article noted that its capacity can provide home for one hundred people. Moreover, the Chaco structure was similar to the early version of architecture seen in Southwest society which had the same function as living. On the other hand the lecturer refutes the writer’s idea and claims that the building cannot be used for living. Furthermore, he argues that there were few fire places used for cooking in the buildings. Therefore, one hundred people cannot resident in the building.
Another point made in the reading is that storage food supplies was the main purpose of the building. It is mentioned that grain maize, a long lasting food, was cumulated in large amount. Thus, the need for storing maize is essential in that period. However, the lecturer contradicts the write’s claim and asserts that many excavations showed no evidence of storing maize. He puts forth his idea by saying that maize was seen in floor. In addition, there was evidence of other big container.
The last point made in the reading is that ceremonials center was taken place in the building. The article mentioned that enormous mound formed by a pile of old material and broken pots used in special ceremony was found. On the contrary, the lecturer states that there were many other materials apart from mound, such as the building material. Both the mound and pile could be the trash thrown away after the meals.
