As early as the twelfth century a.d., the settlements of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico in the American Southwest were notable for their “great houses,” mas- sive stone buildings that contain hundreds of rooms and often stand three or four stories high. Archaeologists have been trying to determine how the buildings were used. While there is still no universally agreed upon explanation, there are three competing theories.
Both the reading and lecture discuss how the Chaco the greate house utilized. The former points out three suggestion and the latter contradict this suggestion.
First of all, the author of the passage claims that the Chaco house was used as an apartment where people reside. However, the lecture contends that, as the Chaco looks like an apartment from outside but from the inside, it did not have the amenity to act as an apartment. For example, it did not have enough fire stations to cook food for hundreds of families, whereas, in reality, it supported only a few fire stations.
Secondly, the author of the passage states that Chaco could have been used as a storage facility for maize crop. However, the lecture contradicts with the statement, the excavation did not find any trace of maize crop or any containers for storing.
Thirdly, the author of the passage claims that the Chaco was used as a ceremonial center. Nevertheless, this idea was ridiculed by the lecturer, stating that the excavation of the site revealed nothing besides the broken pot which contained trash, the lecture also suggest that this trash was dumped by people when the Chaco was being constructed.
