The effectiveness of cloud seeding. Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they respond to the specific points made in the reading passage.
The reading passage states that spraying silver iodide on storm clouds which called "cloud seeding" can reduce hail and will be effective in protecting crops from hail, whereas the professor points out that the evidence is not reasonable.
Firstly, the author insists that experiments in the laboratory show that adding silver iodide to cold water vapor cause the forming of snow rather than hail pellets. The professor, however, argues that it may be true in laboratory condition, but in real life circumstance cloud seeding will prevent the precipitation. And for the areas do not rain much, it will lead to severe drought, as a result, people will suffer from lacking of water.
Secondly, the reading says that the practice has succeeded in urban areas of some Asian countries. So it effectively protect the fields and farms in America. In contrast, the speaker deems that there are differences between Asia and America. Since the pollution in Asian cities is extreme high, which is favorable condition for applying of cloud seeding, in this way, it cannot be implement in unpolluted rural regions of the United States.
Lastly, the reading states that using cloud seeding in a farming region suggested the diminished hail damage compared to previous years. On the contrary, the professor deems that the studies are not convincing either, because the alleviated of hail damage also happened in many neighboring area, as a result, it just might be the consequences of nature variation of local weather.
