effectiveness of tree devices
The reading and the lecture are both about a specific approach through desertification in order to prevent more lands to dry. It is mentioned in the passage that by growing trees in arid areas and providing a box to supply water for them, these lands would be retained and protected from diminishing. However, the author discusses three drawbacks regarding to this solution. On the other hand, the professor is not convinced of this and casts doubt on each of problems presented in the passage. Having categorically rejected all the problems, she explains the reasons.
To commerce, the author and the speaker put forth to the idea of the cost. In this vein, the writer disputes that each of these boxes costs 25 dollars which can be considered a striking amount of money for millions of trees, and many countries are not capable of affording this money. This specific argument is challenged by the speaker. According to the professor, when trees grow bigger these boxes can be removed and be used for even 20 times or more. Therefore, by reusing the boxes, the costs will be feasible.
Secondly, both the article and the lecture discusses the idea of the availability of local people to install and protect the devices. The article argues that local people are adversely impressed by rigorous working condition due to the desertification and are not zealous to give a hand for trees which does not provide benefit for them. Contrastly, the lecturer opposes this notion by asserting that provided the local people be rewarded in competence of looking after trees, they will be eager to help. The professor states that they can, for instance, use part of water for their cultivation purpose or use tree branches as fire wood.
Finally, the author averts that as long as trees outgrow form boxes they would not be able the survive the harsh dry condition. In contrast, the lecturer's stance is that trees can survive this environment after growing taller. She states that since that devices help them grow deeper roots in the soil, so they can take moisture from deeper parts of the soil in the absence of the device. she provides the example of Sahara desert to illuminate this notion and states that 90 percent of these trees survive 2 years after removing the boxes.
