Both the reading passage and lecture discuss whether dinosaurs were endotherms. The former argues that the dinosaurs were in fact endotherms and provides three reasons of support. However, the latter contradicts these three points.
First of all, the passage asserts dinosaurs maintained a constant body temperature because their fossils have been found in polar regions. On the other hand, the professor counters that the polar regions in the past were not as cold as they are today and there were periods that were warm. In addition, she suggests that they either migrated or hibernated during the cold periods of the year.
Secondly, the reading contends that dinosaurs are warm-blooded because they have their legs below their body as all other modern endotherms do. Nevertheless, the lecturer challenges the reading and states that the legs were present under their body in order to support more weight. Furthermore, she states that the position of legs of dinosaurs cause them to grow large as it can be advantageous for them.
Finally, the text claims that dinosaurs keep their body temperature same because their bones consists of Haversian canals. However, the listening is at odds with the text and states that the bones of dinosaurs also contain Growth Rings. She further tells that presence of Growth Rings causes periodic growth rather than rapid growth and this is not a characteristic of endotherms.
- Endotherms are animals such as modern birds and mammals that keep their body temperatures constant For instance humans are endotherms and maintain an internal temperature of 37 C no matter whether the environment is warm or cold Because dinosaurs were rep 73
