Ethanol fuel, made from plants such as corn and sugar cane, has been advocated by some people as an alternative to gasoline in the United States. However, many critics argue that ethanol is not a good replacement for gasoline for several reasons.
First, the increased use of ethanol fuel would not help to solve one of the biggest environmental problems caused by gasoline use: global warming. Like gasoline, ethanol releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere when it is burned for fuel, and carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas: it helps trap heat in the atmosphere. Thus, ethanol offers no environmental advantage over gasoline.
Second, the production of significant amounts of ethanol would dramatically reduce the amount of plants available for uses other than fuel. For example, much of the corn now grown in the United States is used to feed farm animals such as cows and chickens. It is estimated that if ethanol were used to satisfy just 10 percent of the fuel needs in the United States, more than 60 percent of the corn currently grown in the United States would have to be used to produce ethanol. If most of the corn were used to produce ethanol, a substantial source of food for animals would disappear.
Third, ethanol fuel will never be able to compete with gasoline on price. Although the prices of ethanol and gasoline for the consumer are currently about the same, this is only because of the help in the form of tax subsidies given to ethanol producers by the United States government. These tax subsidies have cost the United States government over $11 billion in the past 30 years. If the United States government were to stop helping the producers in this way, the price of ethanol would increase greatly.
The reading and the lecture are both about the value of using ethanol as a fuel instead of gasoline. The author of the passage believes that it had better use of gasoline rather than ethanol. In contrast to that, the lecturer casts doubts on the claims made in the article. She thinks that taking challenge still the most controversial stuff in this contemporary world like considering ethanol, a suitable replacement for gasoline.
First of all, the author points out that burning ethanol will likely cause the greenhouse effect. It is mentioned that would be a reason to be producing carbon dioxide considering as a fuel. The lecturer challenges this point. He says due to burn of corn and sugar cane; the plants will absorb the carbon dioxide gas, which as a consequence, will not be the reason for the increasing effect of greenhouse gas.
Secondly, the author contends that becoming a reason for extinction due to the increase in the production of significant amounts of ethanol. The article notes that corn and sugar cane are also a vital food for cattle and other animals, which could get affected by because of its extensive use for instance of prediction, at least sixty percent of the current corn production will be used to extract fuel. The lecturer refutes this argument. He comes out with a statement that there is another resource to produce ethanol rather than the plant. So the production of meat and a substantial source of food for animals would not disappear.
Finally, the text compares the cost of Ethanol and gasoline. The price of ethanol fuel will be reduced as more people are going to use it. Professor agrees with this statement by showing a statistic report which stated that if the production rate of current ethanol increases by three times the production will reduce the price by forty percent. Whereas, the text says if the Government decision on subsidization of tax on ethanol production is gone the amount of ethanol will rise.
To wrap it up, we can conclude that the lecture dismisses the points made in the text and establishes ethanol as a good alternative over gasoline.
