ETS OFFICIAL IBT TEST-5(SMART CARS)
The article introduces the concept of smart cars which is soon expected to take over the traditional cars. The writer explains how the smart cars have many benefits; making driving easier and safer. The lecturer disagrees with this. He says the smart cars have their own disadvantages and attacks each of the claims introduced in the passage.
First, the author says that smart cars are safe. He goes on to say that this is due to various sensors and automatic programs that do a better job than humans in avoiding accidents. The lecturer on the other hand says that even if the smart cars meet all the technological expertise, they will still get into some accidents which may be more deadly as compared to the accidents in current times. She goes on to say that most of the technologies fail sometimes and as smart cars will be driving close to each other, it will increase the risk of piling on meeting an accident.
Further, the passage states that smart cars will contribute in reducing the traffic on roads as they will have higher speed. The professor states that as the speed of the smart cars increase, convenience will also increase; promoting more number of drivers on the roads. This will in turn lead to traffic congestion.
The author claims that smart cars will reduce cost of driving; they are programmed to take direct routes leading to less wear and tear of parts such as brakes and tires. The lecturer rebuts the argument and says that, even new complex technologies employed in smart cars is usually more costly as compared to traditional technology currently used. She goes on to highlight, that due to such smart technology involved in the cars, even small repairs will be most expensive as compared to repairing the simple mechanical parts.
