Extiction
Both the reading and the lecture are about the ways lead to protect a species of tree called Torreya toxifoha, a type of evergreen tree which is predominant in Florida in United State, from extinction. In this line of thought, the reading passage, present three solutions for saving this kind of tree. The lecturer, on the other hand, refutes all the evidence stated by the text and mentions that none of these ways could be efficient for preventing the decline and cast shadow of doubt on every single point made by the author.
First and foremost, the reading passage brings up the idea that replanting the Torreya in the northern part of Florida which have cooler and wetter weather conditions is the first alternate to prevent this tree. However, the lecturer posits this assertion by stating that this solution seems to be unsuccessful because the northern Florida’s climate is affected by a largest region and now this zone is drained. Also, its being drier than the past because of the temperature increasing due the global warming.
Furthermore, the writer holds the view that the assisted migration is another alternate to protect the Torreya from extinction. In this way, Torreya seeds have been planted in the forest further north, where is completely different from Florida and have coldest temperature. The speaker, in contrast, avers that this solution couldn’t be efficient because this method was implemented for another species of tree, black lodes, and it had some drawbacks. Indeed, black lodes tree spreads in the new environment and killed other native species which most of them were endanger in extinct. She further states that by implementing of this method for Torreya we might be expect such a that unfavorable consequents in the new region and its ecosystem.
Finally, the essay asserts that the another solution for dealing with Torreya decline is transport this kind of tree from its wild nature to a monitored environment like research center and in this way, we can reach to our goals simultaneously which are protecting them and researching on them. Nonetheless, the professor avers that the population of this tree able to resist diseases only when we have relatively large number and genetically diverse of them in a region which is not possible for a research center because of its limitation in capacity.
