The reading and the lecture are both about 4 day woorkweek which is working 4 days a week for 10 hours a day. The author of the reading believes that 4 day work per week will benefit both business and employees enormously. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article. He thinks that 4 day workweek would not significantly improve the businesses and the lifestyle of the people.
First of all, the auhtor claims that the 4-day workweek will eliminate some considerable expenses of the employee. He believes according to a national survey 34% of the employees turned down job opportunities due to long routes to work. This point is challenged by the lecturer. He says that the employees wont be able to save a lot of money by working 4 days a week. Futhermore, he points out on an average the employee will save only 15-20 dollars a week which is 850 dollars per annum and that is not enough.
Secondly, the author states that curbing the number of working days will minimal the operating costs. He argues that the fixed costs of lighting , air conditioning etc. will reduce and will improve profitability. The lecturer rebuts this argument. He suggests that by opening 4 days a week will reduce an entire day of business. This is 20% less business as compared to 5 days a week. He elaborates on this by mentioning that consumers dont stay for longer hours outside to buy stuff.
Finally, the author mentions that employees will be able to spend more time with their loved ones. He notes that with reduced woorkweek employees will be able to spend an extra day with their familiy. The lecturer, on the other hand, states that it would be difficult to find day care for young children for longer hours a day. Also children have to go to school so technically their parents would have half a day to spend time with them.
