The reading states that new technologies have been helping researchers to modify genes in plants for beneficial and profitable characteristics and provides three reasons of support. However, the professor refutes each point by saying that there are major drawbacks in studies and not clear as author claims.
First, reading states that genetic modification can produce better crops than any other method. The professor opposes this point saying that genetic changes in crops takes 100 yrs. In addition, researcher can not change or modify the genes completely.
Second, reading posits that genetically modified foods are safe. These foods pass through extensive tests. However the professor refutes this point by saying no one knows what really happens in the extensive tests. According to the professor companies who modifies genes rarely shares results with the scientific committee. So with no or less information committee can not review data. Companies are unwilling to share because of the fear of competitors.
Third, reading claims that genetic modification creates crops that underdeveloped countries can use to decrease food shortage and famine. He adds that some crops they are modifying can survive with less water. The professor states that food shortage in under developed countries is because of lack of infrastructure to distribute food. So in open market it will not able to generate selling crops. Plants which survive with less water will not solve the problem. They need to do some extra arrangements to save people from hunger.
