glass harmful for birds
The reading discusses how glass as a building material can be harmful to wild birds that can't distinguish between glass and open air. The article discusses three solutions. The professor however, mentions that none of the suggested solutions would effectively work. He provides an explanation of why does he refute each of the solutions .
First, the one-way glass won't make a difference. The outside of it would totally reflect the light. Meaning that birds would still not be able to distinguish whether it is an open space or reflected light. As the professor explains that birds can't understand mirroring.
Second, the colorful designs won't do a great job either. As the author states that people from inside the building will be able to see through the openings in the design, which bring us back to the same point that there are some spaces in the glass that will look like wholes to the birds and they would still try to fly through it and end up getting hurt. The professor add that the only way that this solution can be effective is if the unpainted spaces were really small but that way rooms will be so dark from inside.
Third, the professor doesn't agree with the magnetic fields either. He posits that its true that birds have a natural ability to sense Earth's magnetic field. However, he disputes the idea of using magnetic field to guid the birds away. As he explains that birds don't use this feature when they are travelling in short distances such as moving from one side from the city to another. But they use it when they travel and migrate for log distances for instance, traveling from cold areas to warmer areas in winter. The professor asserts that birds use their eyes and the brightness to lead their ways in short distance traveling and thats why using a magnetic field around the building wouldn't help saving the birds from getting hurt.
