Humans have been battling the tropical disease malaria since at least the late fourth century B.C. This debilitating and deadly disease is actually a parasite which reproduces in humans and is spread through the saliva of mosquitoes when they suck blood from humans. While there is still no cure for malaria, there are three main strategies that we hope will lead to the eradication of this disease which kills nearly half a million people around the world each year.
The first strategy is to fight the malaria parasite itself by treating patients with powerful prescription medicines. Patients are tested to determine which strain of the malaria parasite is present, as different areas of the world have different strains of the parasite. Then, an effective medicine is administered to combat the symptoms of the infection.
The second strategy is to kill the mosquitoes that transfer the parasite to humans. Killing the adult mosquitoes using chemical sprays is a common option, but the larvae of the mosquitoes can also be killed where they develop, in pools of warm, still water. These larvae can be killed using chemicals, but another popular approach is to release fish into the water that prey on the larvae such as guppies to eat the larvae before they mature into adults.
The third strategy is called the sterile insect technique. "Sterile" means the insect cannot reproduce. This strategy involves breeding and hatching millions of mosquitoes, sterilizing the males with low-level gamma rays, and then releasing them into the wild population. Females that mate with the sterile males produce eggs which do not hatch, and this causes the mosquitoes to die out. This strategy has been effective in wiping out a number of insect pests including the screw-worm and several types of fruit flies.
The article and lecture both deals with the concept of malaria disease and its eradication methods. Whilst, the author thinks that, still if there is no any cure for malaria, there can be some strategies to lower their population and support his opinion through three specific strategies. However, Lecturer rebuts the authors each strategies. And further weakens the strategies by stating the flaws in their effectiveness.
First of all, writer claims that treating the malarial patients with the powerful prescribed drugs can help to control the disease. Furthermore, it is stated in the article that identifying the strain of parasite of malaria and using the effective drugs can combat the disease. In contrast, the lecturer argues that, only there are few drugs which are found to be effective to malaria but the malarial parasite has ability to gain resistance to such drugs which are ultimately making them ineffective. Additionally, he exemplified by giving an example of drug called chloroquine , further adds that the drug was effective previously but now the parasite has gain the resistance against it.
Secondly, the author mentions that killing the mosquito that transfer the parasite to human body can be a effective strategy. On top of that, he adds that spraying chemicals to the habitat of mosquito can decimate them completely. However, the lecturer call this argument into question by saying that the population of the mosquitoes is enormous, so to kill them completely is not possible. further, he remarks that it holds same in the case of larva present in water and clarify that it is not possible to destroy them completely.
Finally, the writer asserts that sterile insect technique can be the one of the bests strategy to eradicate disease. He further adds that, such sterile male population would mate and female would produce the unfertilized egg which can help in controlling population. As opposed to author, the lecturer holds that male mosquitoes which are sterile by using gamma rays are found to be less attractive to female mosquitoes, which leads to less infertile eggs and population cannot be fettered.
Coming to end, author and lecturer both holds contradictory view on one another on topic of malaria eradication.
