Essay topics:

Humans have long been fascinated by elephants, the largest land animal in the modern world. Social animals that live in herds, elephants are native to both Africa and Asia. Their large ears, long trunk, and long life span have made elephants one of the most captivating creatures on Earth. Our long-standing interest in elephants has led to several beliefs about surprising elephant behaviors.

According to the reading passage, there are three behaviors of elephants that attract people significantly. However, in the lecture, the professor states that these behaviors are untrue by stating three reasons.

To begin with, the author claims that elephants know when they will die because most of the bones from elderly elephants find beside the water. However, the professor refutes their teeth may not be hard enough to chew food with the elephants growing older. So elderly elephants choose to live beside the water, where they can eat many soft vegetables. As a result, there is a big chance that elderly elephants may die alone near the water.

Moreover, the author believes that elephants have artistic ability as they can draw flowers and other things. On the contrary, the professor rebuts that this ability is result from special training. Due to the sensitivity of elephants' ears, trainers always touch elephants' ear to let them remember the actions and repeat them many times. Even though elephants don't know flowers and any animals, they can draw paintings after this training.

Finally, the author puts forward that elephants fear mice since they run away when seeing mice. Instead, the professor retorts that elephants fear mice, not because of the mice themselves, but because of their instinct that elephants fear anything they are unfamiliar with. In some zoo, where elephants familiar with mice, they don't fear mice at all
