The reading and the lecture talk about the humpback whales. The author believes that this creatures rely on the stars to navigate while migrating. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made by the author.
First of all, the author claims that the humpback whales possess a high degree of intelligence that able them to rely on the night sky for their orientation. The lecturer refutes this point. He explains that there is no connection between the intelligence of the whales and the use of the stars. He gives the example of the birds. This kind of creatures have the ability of using the stars despite they don't possess a high level of intelligence.
Second, the author explains that compared to other animals who use a certain external objects or force to maintain their movement in a straight way, the whales, on the other hand, rely on the sky visual at night to maintain their direction with a long rage of distance. The professor, opposes this argument. He put on forth the idea that whales are bio magnetic creatures, which make them a sensitive creatures and the force suggested by the magnetism field able them to move for a long distance in the same direction.
Third, the author proposes that the spy-hopping behaviour defined by floating whales on the surface of the water, explain that the whales are looking to the stars. The lecturer opposes this explanation. He says that spy hopping is made by other animals like shark. In addition this behaviour is made during the day where no presence of the stars. Which explains that the whales don't really rely on the night vision stars during this act.
