The writer of the article and the lecturer talk about the rising sea level. The writer claims that there is not much to worry about the rising sea level. However, the lecturer states that the rate at which sea level is rising is alarming and it will have detrimental effects on our planet.
Firstly, the writer claims that melting of polar ice caps is not responsible for rise in sea level. In contrast, the lecturer states that the melting of permafrost is causing the sea level to increase. It is unnatural for the ice that are on land to melt. Furthermore, she gives an example of large blocks of perma-frost ice melting in countries like Greenland. As these large blocks of ice on land melt, they add large amount of water into the oceans, thus causing sea level to rise.
Secondly, the writer states that the NASA has no clue about the source of the water that is driving the sea level up. On the other hand, the lecturer says that current data available cannot tell the amount of water being added to oceans, seas due to melting of permafrost but it has been proven by NASA that melting of these ice blocks can cause the sea level to rise.
Finally, the writer feels that the planet is going through a certain phase since Earth has seen many variations in sea levels. At one point of time, half of the land mass was inundated by water. The lecturer disagrees with that since melting of perma-frost ice was never witnessed before. She claims that these ice blocks melting owing to human activities such as excessive use of fossil fuel. She believes that the sea level is rapidly increasing and the rate at which it is increasing is alarming.
In conclusion it can be said that it is a debatable topic and both the sides will find it difficult to find a common ground.
