Based on the given materials, the article as well as the lecture discusses "let it burn" policy, in which natural forest fires continue burning the whole forest without being harmful to anyone. The author states that there have been seen several viable damages caused by the mentioned policy after the most famous national park of US, Yellowstone, was burnt in large scale. That being said, the lecturer provides several ideas to repudiate these critics.
Initially, the writer says that since nearly one third of the national park was destroyed by forest fires, the policy is likely harmful to vegetation of the place in both large and small scales. However, the speaker explains that scorched forests are colonized by new plants, and fire provides an opportunity for plants which cannot grow under this condition. As a result, diversity of vegetations will be augmented. For instance, destroyed trees make an opportunity for smaller plants which require open spaces to grow, or most of seeds need high heat to germinate, and the heat will be provided by forest fires.
Second, the author proclaims that "let it burn policy provides a dangerous condition for fauna species, such as elk, deer and small animals, which forests count as their habitat. In addition, the forest fires will put these animals' food chain in danger. Yet again, the lecturer underscores that the policy not only recover animals' population but also, brings up an opportunity for their thriving in particular ways. For example, small animals like rabbits and hares feed on small plants. Whenever these animals grow up and flourish, they become a prey for new predators, and these repeated phenomena make the food chain even stronger than before.
The final point of contention between the reading and the listening passage is damages of "let it burn" policy to attracting tourists. The author thinks that forest fires cause shortening of tourist seasons and it threaten local businesses. On the other hand, the speaker explains that if the fires occur repeatedly, they would be counted as threats to tourism. many inconsistent factors are developed in forest fires, such as low rainfall and strange winds; none of the mentioned factors occurs continuously.
