The reading and listening have a conflict of opinion about the presence of ancient electric batteries on clay jars which were discovered in Iraq. In the reading passage, the author discusses that there are not vessels were used as electric batteries in ancient time for three reasons. While the lecturer claims that the passage statement is not convincing and refutes those ideas with several proofs.
Firstly, according to the reading passage, it is suggested that presence of vessels is not likely batteries due to not attachment to some electrical conductors such as metal wires. However, the speaker argues in the lecture that it is not true because this jar is founded by local people, not archaeologists and maybe there were other materials which they did not recognize them as an electric attachment and throw them away.
In addition, the statement in the reading material indicates that copper cylinder inside the jars looks like those in another ancient city from which were used for holding scrolls of sacred texts. In contrast, the professor points out that it could not prove and it is possible that in the past this jar was used for one purpose and then is adapted to another one. Also, the existing of iron could be designed for producing electricity.
Finally, the author of the reading claims that vessels as batteries have been absolutely useless for ancient people. On the contrary, the speaker argues that maybe someone shocked with touching that device and they interpreted that is magical power.
Therefore, the professor statement opposes the reading claims.
