Both the reading passage and the lecture are about the establishment of a permanent station on Venus. the author of the reading passage feels that it is impossible to build permanent station on Venus. However, this is challenged by the lecturer. He is of the opinion that building of a stable station on Venus is possible.
First of all, the author argues that the atmospheric pressure of Venus is very high, 90 times higher than that of the Earth. In the article, it is mentioned that at such high-pressure anybody on the surface of Venus would be crushed. This point is challenged by the lecturer. He says that station can be placed at about 50 kilometers above Venus surface, where atmospheric pressure is nearly the same as that of the Earth. So, the staion and humans wouldn't be destroyed.
Secondly, the writer contends that it is necessary to transport water and oxygen from the Earth to Venus, as there is no water and oxygen. In the article is mentioned that the Venus atmosphere is mostly composed of CO2, nitrogen, and sulfuric acid and rarely contains oxygen. This argument is rebutted by the lecturer. He said that Venus contains chemical materials and carbon dioxide which can be used to generate water and oxygen.
Finally, the writer posits that the amount of sunlight reaching the Venus surface is limited. It is included in the article that a thick layer of cloud and carbon dioxide will prevent the adequate amount of sunlight available in the Venus surface so that the generation of electricity through the solar cells is not adequate. In contrast, the speaker says that above 50 kilometers from the Venus surface, there is an adequate amount of light reaches which can be used to produce electricity to power machines and equipment. So, the establishment of the permanent station on Venus is possible.
