Jumping Young Salmon. Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they
cast doubt on the specific theories presented in the reading passage)
The reading passage and the lecture are both concerning the jumping of young salmon. From their contexts, it can be stated that the prevailing discussion is about the veracity of theories to explain this behavior. While the author of the reading passage claims that there are three possible theories to explain this behavior, the lecturer completely refutes the arguments in the article. Hence, arguing that these explanations are faulty for the following reasons.
Firstly, it is said by the lecturer that the feeding theory is not correct to support the jumping behavior. This is because although some species feed insects, other species of young salmon feed only zooplanct. This directly contradicts the reading passage that denotes that young salmon also feed insects, hence explaining the jumping behavior.
Secondly, the lecturer safely assumes that salmons also use different strategies to avoid predators besides jumping. Furthermore, jumping can make them more visible to birds and bears, therefore, travelling in groups and swimming in different directions could be better approaches. This idea strongly contrasts with the article that mentions that jumping out of the water helps salmons to scape or distract predators.
Finally, the lecturer believes that jumping behavior to remove lice is a huge energy consuming task. This is because it is necessary fifty or more jumps just to remove one louse. Since young salmons need energy to grow and keep strong it is not a plausible explanation.
The text, on the other hand, states that an experiment confirm that the remotion of lice from salmon body could be an explanation to the jumping behavior.
