The reading and the lecture are both about Edmontosaurus that lived in the North Slope before 100 million years ago in harsh circumstances. More specifically, in regard to the passage, the writer presents three theories about migrating these dinasaurs to the south to detect more vaorable conditions. The lecturer disputes the claims made in the article. His position is that these clues are not persuasive.
First and foremost, the author of the reading states Edmontosaurs feed on plants, so they may moved to other places to find food in warmer territories. This argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that Edmontosaurs does not have to migrate because they can feed on dead plants. Additionally, he points out that in the North Slope at summer, the sun rises for 24 hours, which allow a good habitat to the growth of abundant trees, and then these plants will die. As a result, the dinosaurs can feed on them.
Secondly, the author suggests edmontosaur fossils found in the sam time which confirms that they lived in groups. In the article, it is said that moving in herds help animals to coordinate like buffalo and caribou. Again, the speaker specifically addresses this point when he states the animals that live in herds have more reasons instead of migrate like establish a protecction from perdators. He goes on to say that elk lived in herds but did not migrate.
Finally, the author brings his argument to a close by suggesting that edmonosaurs have the ability to move long distances because they can run in a high speed. Not surprisingly, the lecturer takes issue with this claim by contending that it is true they have the ability to run, but their kids does not have this feature. He notes that herds will not leave their youngs behind them, so they have to stay in the cold weather to survive.
