The reading and lecture both discuss the using of sucralose for losing weight. While the reading provides three disadvantages of using the sucrolse, the professor refutes, saying none of these claims are convincing.
Firstly, the reading states that using sucralose cause shrinking of thymus. So, it will hurt the immune system for many people. On the other hand, the professor questions this notion by saying that the studies of sucralose on rats could not cause harmful unless they take large quantities. As a result, comparing to the amount of sucralose that used in the studies, people can eat up to four thousand times per day for a month.
Secondly, the article avers that sucralose belongs to organocholordies. So, it has a toxic effect and it will cause cancer for people who use sucralose on long run. However, the professor rejects this idea by pointing out that organochlorides are toxic substances because these materials build up in the fat tissues and these can cause toxic effect. On other hand, sucralose does not digest very well. So, it does not accumulate in the tissues. Furthermore, sucralose does not cause any dangerous effect.
Lastly, the reading mentions that people who use sucralose their appetite to suger will increased. Moreover, they will eat other more sugar substance. Consequently, it will be hard for them to lose weight. Nevertheless, the professor contradicts this point by explaining that this argue is true for many other sweeteners. This is because other sweeteners break down by heat. However, sucralose does not break up with high heat. As a result, people will not eat more sugar stuff like cookies or cake. Consequently, they can keep their diet on track.
