Let it burn

Essay topics:

Let it burn

Both the reading and the listening sections are about "let it burn" policy which suggested that forest fires would burn themselves quickly without causing much damage . However in 1988 in Yellowstone park there were terrible fires that last more than two month and caused serious problems . That is why many people were displeased with the "let it burn" policy and demanded to extinguish forest fires ones they appeared. The lecturer , by contrast , challenges the claim made by the author. She is of the opinion that fires are natural part of ecological cycle . Moreover she argues that their role is not just destructive but also creative . In addition to this she considered the policy of "let it burn" a good one , even if it sometimes causes terrible fires like 1988 fire in Yellowstone .

To begin with the article argues that Yellowstone’s fires caused huge damage to the trees in the park and other plants that were blackened and burnt. The listening section, by contrast , mentions that fire created an opportunity for certain plant species that could not grow otherwise. In further it notes that scorched areas were colonized by new plants . Additionally the professor contends that some seeds will not germinate until they meet very high level of heat .

Secondly, the text suggests that the fauna of the park was affected too. More specifically it notes that as a result of distracted habitats and food chain there was anxiety that animals that survived the fire would not return to the park. The lecturer , by contrast ,rebuts this argument by mentioning that fire created ideal habitats for certain small animals like rabbits . Beyond that she also mentions that when small animals started thriving so did some predators that depended on them for food . So in other words some food chains became stronger than they were before the fire.

Finally the reading passage points out that so many visitors decided to stay away from the park and as a result tourism was damaged , which on the other hand had negative outturn for the businesses that depend on the park tourism and thus the economy of the city was also corrupted . The lecturer conversely argues that fires like 1988 fire would be a problem for the tourism if they were every year but they do not. She elaborates on this by bringing up the point that the combination of unusual factors like low rainfall and strong winds have not occurred since , so visitors of the park came back the next year and each year after that.
