The reading states that the extreme and inhospitable conditions on Venus makes the human presence impossible there; and provides reasons for the support. However, the professor explains that humans on Venus is certainly possible by creating a station floating on the Venus's atmosphere just 50 Km above its surface. This would probably solve each of the problems mentioned in the article.
First, the article posits that the atmospheric pressure at the Venus's surface is almost 90 times greater than that of the earth's. As a result, it will not only crush the spaceship but also the humans. However, the professor challenges this point by stating that the atmospheric pressure 50 km above the Venus's surface is similar to the normal pressure on the Earth. Consequently, being in a spaceship 50 km above the ground would eliminate the danger of being crushed.
Second, the reading avers that the unavailability of water and oxygen would defeat the purpose of establishing a permanent station on Venus. The professor rebuts this argument by saying that the venus's atmosphere contains CO2, nitrogen and sulphuric acid, which can be used to generate water and oxygen. She explains that using chemical materials at the station, water and oxygen can be produced for the survival. So, there won't be any need to export it from earth.
Finally, the article claims that because of the clouds and CO2 layer in the atmosphere, enough sunlight does not reach the planet's surface, preventing the production of solar energy to power the machines and equipments. On the other hand, the professor mentions that the clouds above the station, which is 50 km above the surface, are not so thick. As a result, there would be considerable amount of sunlight to power the solar cells. In addition, the sunlight reflected from the clouds below the station can also be used. Thus, the solar power cells can use both, the direct sunlight from above and the sunlight reflected from below, to generate more than enough electricity to power the station.
