Otters declining Explanations
The reading and the lecture are discussing the reason behind the declining in the number of otters, which is a mammal. The reading support the idea that the pollution is the reason. On the other hand. the lecturer argues that the real reason for the declining in otters is the predators.
First of all, The author claims that pollution explanation is supported by the fact that the pollution material is known across the alskan coast such as oil rigs and other industrial materials. He states that water samples showed that the chemicals concentration of material that may affects the otters resistance is increased. The lecturer challenged this point. She says that the no dead body of otters is found on the water surface or washed by the water to the coast. Which provide evidence that supports the idea of predator cause because if predator ate otter then the body of the otter will not be washed by water to coast. On the other hand, if otters is dead because of pollution then many dead otters must be found and washed by waters.
Secondly, the author of the reading states that other mammals such seals and sea lions were declining also. He argues that the reduction in number of many species supports the pollution explanation because it indicates that the entire ecosystem is affected . The lecturer rebuts this argument. She suggest that the cause of declining in number of many species is the predator, orca. Moreover, she mentioned that the preferred food for orca, large whale, is missing now, and as result orca decided to switch and eat smaller animals such as otter and sea lions.
Finally, the author states that the uneven pattern of declining in otters numbers support the pollution explanations. He added that water currents caused a different concentration of chemicals in different ares in the ocean. The lecturer, on the other hand, states that due to the size of orca it was unable to access shallow and rocky areas. And in these areas the number of otters where not declining as in other area that orca has an access to it.
