In the past century, the steady growth of the human population and the corresponding increase in agriculture and pesticide use have caused much harm to wildlife in the United States—birds in particular. Unfortunately for birds, these trends are likely to continue, with the result that the number of birds in the United States will necessarily decline.
First, as human population and settlements continue to expand, birds’ natural habitats will continue to disappear. Forests, wetlands, and grasslands will give way to ever more homes, malls, and offices. As the traditional areas suitable for birds keep decreasing, so will the size of the bird populations that depend on those vanishing habitats.
Second, agricultural activities must increase to keep pace with the growing human population. The growth of agriculture will also result in the further destruction of bird habitats as more and more wilderness areas are converted to agricultural use. As a result, bird populations in rural areas will continue to decline.
Third, as human settlements expand and agriculture increases, the use of chemical pesticideswill also increase. Pesticides are poisons designed to kill agricultural and home garden pests, such as insects, but inevitably, pesticides get into the water and into the food chain for birds where they can harm birds. Birds that eat the poisoned insects or drink contaminated water can die as a result, and even if pesticides do not kill birds outright, they can prevent them from reproducing successfully. So pesticides have significantly contributed to declines in bird population, and because there will continue to be a need to control agricultural pests in the future, this decline will continue.
The Author of the reading and the lecturer are both about consequences of human settlement in urban area for birds and how the population of birds may alter as a result of these human activities. the writer feels the population of birds have been facing a major decrease while the speaker does not agree by mentioning following reasons.
First, the reading claims the more human population and land dwellers, the less the space for birds to live. humans destruct forests, wetlands, and grasslands in order to prepare lands around themselves to accommodate. The lecturer opposes this idea by stating the fact that in recent years most of those who live in cities are now complaining about the increase in the number of birds which settled in urban and sub urban area. The speaker tells student that while some birds might shrink in their population, there are other species which are growing in number as a result of the habitat which is provided by urban expansion.
Secondly, The reading claims with the concentration and growth of human population more agricultural activities are needed. This is happening since there exist always the need for feeding the community. The author rebuts this idea by pointing out a fact about new technological advances. She describes with the growing need of food, new approaches have been invented which results in more production, even new crops capable of producing more nutrition are used in these lands so less land is needed.
Finally,The author talks about chemical pesticides usage as a consequence of agricultural activities and human settlements elaboration. The pesticides are harmful since they enter birds food chain and eventually causes their death, However; The lecturer is not agree with the reading by claiming that it is a true history but with the growth of awareness usage of this chemicals are now declined. She states that by planting new vegetation resistant to pests, not only these chemicals are no longer needed but also they are less toxic.
