The reading contends that it is beneficial for businesses and employees when converted to a 10-hour-a-day, 4-day workweek. However, the lecturer bring about several points that contradict this argument.
First of all, the lecturer questions the validity of the reading passage that the conversion will reduce considerable expenses for the average employee. This is attributed to the fact that it is true that the cost of gas and vehicle maintenance will be eliminated by the conversion. However, according to the survey, most commuters have driven approximately 30mile for reaching their business place. In addition, it only costs 50$ to reach their working places. Thus, the reading passage’s first point is not convincing.
Moreover, the lecturer cast doubt on the idea in the reading passage that a 4-day workweek will cut the operating expenses of most businesses. This is because even if the expenses will be cut, companies might have lost benefits about 20% in terms of business viewpoint, compared to 5-day workweek. Consequently, the reading passage’s second point is not reasonable.
Last but not least, the lecturer disagrees with the idea in the reading passage that improving the ability of employees to spend time with their families will results from a 4-day workweek. It is obvious that in order to make up 40 hours a week, employees have to work 10-hours-a-day. However, it makes difficulties for their young children to stay at day care facilities more longer than before and but also for their parents to find suitable day care facilities for longer. As a result, the reading passage’s last point is contradicted.
