The reading passage contends that there are three ways to prevent Torreya taxifoha, which is a type of evergreen tree once vey common in the state of Florida, from declining. On the other hand, the lecturer brings about several points that contradict this argument.
First of all, the lecturer questions the validity of the reading passage’s point that it is better for Torreya to reestablish itself in the same location in which once they thrived for thousands of years. This is attributed to the fact that even if Torreya is shifted into the northern part of Florida, there are several concerns. As global warming is occurred, many areas across the United States also have been becoming dry, increasing temperature. Consequently, the reading passage’s first point is invalid.
Moreover, the lecturer cast doubt on the point in the reading passage that moving Torreya to different areas further north, where the temperature is significantly cooler, is the second option. This is because in the past, scientists have moved Black Rocus trees to different locations; however, the trees have thrived and attacked other trees in the same ecosystem. And many of tree species were extinct by them. It might be unpredictable and need to research carefully more and more. Thus, the reading passage’s second point is contradicted.
Last but not least, the lecturer disagrees with the point in the reading passage that preserving Torreya in research center is the third option. It is obvious that they are not capable to resist to divers disease for a long period. This is due to the fact that for resisting to diverse disease, they are needed to large genetic diverse. However, in the research center, there are limited to not be provided large genetic diverse. As a result, the reading passage’s final point is confused.
