Productivity and Rewards
The reading and the lecture are about the productivity and rewards. The reading provides a brief explanations of the reward system and explains its importance in increasing the productivity with the help of rewards and also provides several reasons of support. However, the lecturer explains that this reward system may be good enough in some cases but in cases it is considered as being controlled by the higher authorities and may result counterproductive in some cases. The lecturer thus casts doubt on the claims made in the reading.
Firstly, the reading claims that productivity and rewards are an important management princilple that when behavior is rewarded, it tends to be repeated. Rewards tends to increase the productivity of the employees and this can be in any form ranging from special privileges, promotion, paid luxury vacations and so on. This point is challenged by the lecturer. He says that in most cases it may be rewarding but in other cases it is not appreaciated and people tend to feel manipulated and controlled by the authorities when they receive such rewards. Instead, when asked they said that their work should be paid off according to their performance and they should be respected rather than giving such rewards. As they feel rewards are a kind of punishment.
Secondly, the reading mentions that the result of the rewards are more productivity of the employees as they tend to repeat the behavior when they receive the reward. On the other hand, the lecturer says that the reawards may result in counterproductiveness in many cases as a desire for such rewards may be dissapointing when not achieved. Moreover, he adds that this might even damage the relationship between the employee and the superiors when they fails to achive certains goals. He explains that an employee cannot ask help from the superior who hold the rewards in fera of loosing the opportunity for receiving the reward. Thus, it is not always the case that a reward may result in they way it is intended and may have some bad consequences which are not desirable.
In conclusion, the lecturer effectively casts doubt on all of the claims and theories presented in the reading.
