We have observed a gradual increase of the sea level during the last decades. It is a slow increase, and despite the alarmist attitudes of some, it is nothing to be worried about. By analyzing the data and looking into the matter clearly, we can find that this is a normal process that has happened before.
Even though we have documented a rise in the polar ice melting, this isn't the reason for the increase in the sea level. That ice is already in the water, so it displaces it already. Think of ice cubes in your glass of water, when they melt it doesn't make the water from the glass spill over. The same thing happens when the ice cap melts. Since the Ice is 90% already in water, when it goes into a liquid state, nothing drastic happens.
When it comes to the source for the increase in the sea level, we just don't know where it comes from. Many scientific agencies like NASA have stated that they simply don't know from where all this new water is coming. So it is still a great unknown to us.
The sea level has been fluctuating ever since the continents have emerged from the primordial ocean. We have seen many changes through the eons, half of our current landmass was submerged at one point. The same will probably happen later, and it will be through a slow and gradual process. Enough time will pass for humanity to adjust.
The passage states that during the last decade there has been an increase in the sea level. Although the increase has been slow, and despite the alarmist attitude of some there is nothing to worry about. The passage also suggests that this is a normal process that has happened before and would probably happen later through a slow and gradual process. However, according to the lecture, the rise in sea levels is a result of human activities that have been going on for quite a few years. And there could be a grim future ahead of us if we do not act now.
Firstly, the passage claims that melting of polar ice is not responsible for rising sea levels since the ice is 90% already in water, when it goes into liquid state and nothing drastic happens. Whereas, the lecture claims that melting of permafrost is more important than ice. The melting of permafrost means conversion of land ice to liquid state and directly increases the level of water. In order to support the above argument, the lecture gives an example of what is happening in Greenland. The process of melting permafrost is something that is not supposed to happen and is therefore alarming.
Secondly, the passage argues that the increase in sea level is not known and the fact that even scientific agencies like NASA do not know where all this new water is coming from. The lecture on the other hand states that it is inappropriate to say that there is not enough evidence to validate rise in sea levels. Studies have shown that the amount of permafrost getting melted could be the reason for increasing water levels across the globe.
Thirdly, the passage states that the sea levels have been fluctuating since the emergence of the primordial ocean and it will happen again through a slow and gradual process. However, the lecture claims that the major reason for increase in sea levels is human activities. The burning of fossil fuels in an unsustainable way has risen the temperatures all over the world that in turn led to the melting of permafrosts. This process has caused the melting of permafrosts increase by 100% in the last decade. The lecture also states that most of the world’s economic activities are near the sea and with the current rate of rising sea levels we could lose 20% of the landmass in the future.
