R. robustus
According to the reading, psittacosaur dinosaur's remains have been identified in the stomach of the 150-million-year old fossil remains of a mammal known as R. robustus. The reading claims that the R.robustus was not an active hunter and it must have been a scavenger that sometimes ate unhatched dinosaurs from eggs. However, on the other hand, the lecturer disputes this hypothesis. She casts doubts on the main points of the reading based on three reasons.
First, the reading states that R. robustus are smaller in size than the psittacosaurs. As a consequence, the R. robustus could not have hunted a bigger animal than them. In contrary, the lecturer disagrees with this opinion. She points out that the R. robustus could have hunted the baby dinosaurs as they were of comparable size of the mammal. Further, she adds that the mammal is twice the mass of the baby dinosaurs in the fetus.
Second, the reading notes that R.robustus is much more suitable for scavenging rather than hunting. It uses the fact that the mammal had short and oddly positioned legs that could have restricted it to move fast. To prove this assumption wrong, the lecturer uses the example of the modern day mammal "tasmanian devil" which also has similar features to R. robustus but has the capacity to run at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour. Moreover, she mentions that the tasmanian devil can act quickly and is a successful hunter.
Finally, the reading claims that the dinosaur bones that were identified inside the mammal's stomach did not have teeth marks of the mammal. The reading uses this evidence to support the idea that R.robustus must have eaten unguarded dinosaur eggs in the nest whearas the lecturer denies this claim. She suggests that R. robustus had powerful jaws that enabled it to swallow the prey in large or whole pieces. She points out that this is the reason why there were no teeth marks on the dinosaur's bones found in the mammal's stomach.
