Rainforest should be deforested or not?
The reading and the lecture both talk about deforestation and their effects on the communities. While the author of the article talks argues that deforestation should be allowed and it helps prosper the livelihood of local citizens, the speaker negates it with logical reasoning and effective alternatives. Their position is that we need to be concerned by long term effects of deforestation, making it a disadvantage despite the short-term economic gains.
Firstly, according to the article, the writer’s central point was that the increase in population will cause and higher demand for food supplies, hence deforestation will help in land creation for farming and livestock management. Building on that, the article also mentions these methods will increase the workflow for locals, boosting the local economy and giving them a chance to export their goods. This specific argument is challenged by the speaker, when they claim that deforestation for food, has caused some countries about 60% of their rainforest, hence we need to come up with alternative ways like Hydroponics to match the food requirement. Additionally, the speaker suggests us to use the technological advancements to find moderate path to increase the food production without affecting the rainforests.
Secondly, the author suggests to also point out that the population influx might cause a demand in residential spaces, hence the new bare land will be adequate spaces for residential complexes. They also go onto suggest that this will bolster the economy as investors will buy land and infuse your locality with working capital and jobs for the citizens. Although, the speaker asserts this cutting down of forest may cause major loss for flora and fauna of the diverse wildlife, also decreasing the average oxygen production by 28%
Finally, the author puts forward the idea of deforestation and the processes around it have been major job producers for many countries for the past decade, hence stopping it will put them at an unprepared financial risk. They content that with examples like Brazil, Indonesia, and Thailand, to make us understand the gravity of the situation. In contrast, the lecturer’s stance clearly states that in long term this only supports the whims of the businessman, also causing irreparable damages to the local rainforests. They claim that they specifically target developing nations, where these businessmen can employ people at lower wages to in unsafe work conditions in order to earn some money.
