Recently, there has a debate about the approaches that might be used to stop the increasing in cane toad population in Australia, the author in the reading passage comes up with three approaches to solve this problem, while, the professor in the lecture completely disagrees with all these approaches and argues each on extensively.
The reading and the lecture are both about the cane toad species is being an invasive species to australia, which was introduced as a solution to protect farmer's crops from pests. The author of the reading believes there are three possible ways to eliminate this invasive species. The lecturer challenges the statements made by the author. she is of the opinion that they would like to be unsuccessful.
First of all, the author sugges that building a national fence could help this problem by preventing the cane toads moving to uncolonized areas. it is mentioned that the spread of rabbits, another invasive species, were controlled by such way. The argument is refuted by the lecturer. she says the toads' eggs and younglings are found near bodies of water, particularly rivers and springs. So one way or another such young toads would be carried by river to other areas. Furthermore, she argues that even if we toads are left alive they can multiply fast.
Secondly, the article posits that the toads could be captured and eliminated by volunteers. The article notes that the toads are easy to find and their younglings are even more easier to find and be captured. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by asserting that untrained volunteers could kill other frogs and amphibians. she elaborates on this by mentiong that the cane toad and Australian native frogs look similar especially when they are young.
Finally, it is stated in the article that a disease causing virus could erdicate the toad species. The author establishes that even though that virus could infect other amphibians, it wouldn't harm them. The lecturer, on the other hand, opposes that the cane toads in the original continient could be affected by the virus. she puts forth the idea that many visitors come to australia to get reptiles and amphibians. As a result, the virus would spread easily to the natural habitat of the toad cane.
