Essay topics:

Rembrandt is the most famous of the seventeenth-century Dutch painters. However, there are doubts whether some paintings attributed to Rembrandt were actually painted by him. One such painting is known as attributed to Rembrandt because of its style, and indeed the representation of the woman’s face is very much like that of portraits known to be by Rembrandt. But there are problems with the painting that suggest it could not be a work by Rembrandt.

First, there is something inconsistent about the way the woman inthe portrait is dressed. She is wearing a white linen cap of a kind that only servants would wear-yet the coat she is wearing has a luxurious fur collar that no servant could afford. Rembrandt, who was known for his attention to the details of his subjects’ clothing, would not have been guilty of such an inconsistency.

Second, Rembrandt was a master of painting light and shadow, but in this painting these elements do not fit together. The face appears to be illuminated by light reflected onto it from below. But below the face is the dark fur collar, which would absorb light rather than reflect it. So the face should appear partially in shadow-which is not how it appears. Rembrandt would never have made such an error.

Finally, examination of the back of the painting reveals that it was painted on a panel made of several pieces of wood glued together. Although Rembrandt often painted on wood panels, no painting known to be by Rembrandt uses a panel glued together in this way from several pieces of wood.

For these reasons the painting was removed from the official catalog of Rembrandt’s paintings in the 1930s.

The passage claims that the painting "Potrait of an Ederly woman in a White Bonnet" is not painted by the famous painter rembrandt as it has many eroor and doesnot match the charater with the other paintings of him he was well known for. The passage provides mainly three reasons to support its claim. however, the lecturer refutes the claim that the painting was painted by the Rembrant from the recent detail analysis of the painting and provide each reason to negate the easons taken by the passage.

first of all, the passage claims that the women in the paintaing dressed inconsistent which directly conflicts the rembrandt style of the paintaing. however, the lecturer says that later investigation finds that there is layer on the top of the painting which hide the originality of the paintaing. he added that fur collar of the woman in the paintaing is exactlt matched after the layer was removed by the analysis through x-ray. Again, it is also hypothesized that the fur collar may have been added hundred years after the painting to attract the aristocracy of that time to buy it in higher price.

Secondly, the lecture says that the painting also supports the act of balance shadoe and light as does other painting of the rembrandt. On removing the top layer of the painting we can finds that the face of the woman in the painting is not in the shadow as decribed in the passage of its refusal to be rembrandt work.

Lastly, contary to the passage, the painting have been painted in the the single piece of the wood which is prevalent in rembrandt work. he added that the additional layer most be placed by the other s after painting has created to make it very garndiose. Then, it is concluded that the additional glue work is not the orginal nature of the painting. Therefore, this fact also waeken the claim of the passage that it is not rembrandt work.
