The remote easter island has been inhabited from about the fourth century CE. Much academic debate has centered on accounting for the origins of the people who migrated there and created its huge stone statues, which are the island's most well-known cultural artifacts. The norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl believed that the initial colonization came from South America, several thousand kilometers to the east. He based his claims on several factors including the similarities in prehistoric cultural remains between parts of the continent and the island. In order to help prove his theory, Heyerdahl and his crew sailed a simple balsa wood raft from the peruvian coast and reached the polynesian archipelago using only the prevailing winds. His successful navigation bolstered the theory of the south american origins of the easter islands.
The two sources are talking about the origin of inhabitants in Easter Island. Previously, people believed that the initial populations in the island came from parts of South America as supported by the travel history of Norwegian explorer at that time. Recent studies, however, deny the previous theory and support it with some new findings.
The theory of South American origins of the Easer Island people is based on the success of Heyerdahl’s wind-powered voyage. However, the lecture argues that the migration actually came from West as supported by some evidence.
Evidence from researchers shows similarities in some aspects between Easter Island and Polynesia including linguistic, oral traditions and material culture. Furthermore, the similarities between these two areas were supported by the recent study about the skulls measurement in Easter Island. Skulls shapes found in Easter Island are more identical with those found in Polynesia than in South America.
In conclusion, considering the similarities evidence between Easter Island and Polynesia, people now tend to accept the new theory that initial people in Easter Island came from West, not East.
