The Salton Sea in California is actually a salty inland lake. The level of salt in the lake’s water—what scientists call its salinity—has been increasing steadily for years because the lake’s water is evaporating faster than it is being replaced by rainfall or rivers. If the trend continues, the lake’s water will soon become so salty that the lake will be unable to support fish and bird populations. The lake would then become essentially a dead zone. Fortunately, there are several ways to reverse the trend that is threatening the lake’s health.
The listening content totally contradicts the reading passage in the topic of solutions on salinity in Salton Sea. Firstly, the author says that one solution of this problem is removing salt from the lake water in some desalination facilities. However, the speaker points out that this process may cause some more serious problems which pose health risk. To be specific, the desalination will leave behind solid material including not only salt but also some toxic chemicals. When these toxic materials fly into the air, then they will become harmful to humans.
Secondly, the author mentions that another possible option to address this problem is to dilute the salt level in the lake with water from the sea. Likewise, the speaker argues that the reading doesn't take account into the side effects of this solution. Given that the distance between Salton Sea and the ocean is 100 kilometer, the construction fee of the pipeline which brings the ocean water into the lake will be incredible. Thus, it will be too expensive for the government to pay.
Lastly, the author supposes that we can solve this problem by constructing walls to divide the lake and reduce the salt in the main section. Nevertheless, the lecturer refutes this proposal for its durability. Some earthquakes are destructive in this area. Once a main earthquake happens, then the wall will destroy and this proposal can't work out anymore. To put it differently, the lecturer maintains that the wall unlikely works for a long time, and the salty water may easily flow back to the fresh main section again.
